Analysis

Managers are not very visible.
Some managers have adopted an autocratic style.
Managers in general are  interested in the welfare of the staff.
There is not enough discussion with the staff prior to major decisions being taken.

Evaluation
The management are more paternalistic than competitors.
Some managers seem aloof from the staff.
One or two senior managers have adopted a macho style which is not appropriate for Ashley's.
Some members of staff are afraid of their managers.

Strategy
Increase the visibility and professionalism of directors.
Increase the feedback from staff to their managers.
Use external consultants to review the situation.
Produce and implement a code of conduct for managers to follow.
