Example 5:  Decomposing a facet of the organization into elements

A particular facet or part of the organization's operation will usually consist of a number of elements. Some examples are given below.

E-commerce for retail organizations
A line-of-business activity which uses computer technology to maintain a relationship with other organizations within the external infrastructure.

Training department
A part of the functional composition of the organization which provides a support activity to enhance the skills of managers and workers.

Marketing
A support activity to enhance the organization's position with its customers (present and potential) compared with its competitors.

Legal department
A part of the functional composition of the organization that provides a compliance activity to ensure that legal constraints are adhered to.

Mentoring
A management activity concerned with the right attitude to work and personal development of other managers and workers.
